GDOT has finished the primary reconstruction of the I-285 and I-20 East interchange in DeKalb County, with the main travel lanes and flyover ramps open, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, citing a GDOT release. The project built eight bridges, including new overpasses at Fairington and Miller roads, plus more than 11 lane miles of auxiliary and connecting lanes. GDOT says peak rush-hour speeds were as low as 26.1 mph when work began in late 2023 and reached 55.7 mph earlier this year. Cleanup in the median and on shoulders continues through spring 2027.
Why It Matters for Atlanta Professionals
An interchange once ranked among the nation's worst bottlenecks should mean a more predictable east-side commute for DeKalb and I-20 drivers, sales teams and delivery businesses.
