A $25 Million Plan Would Turn Atlanta's Historic Lakewood Heights Elementary Into Apartments and Shops

FOX 5 Atlanta reports developer Omar Ali plans a $25 million redevelopment of the former Lakewood Heights Elementary School off Sawtell Avenue, with family-sized apartments and 12,000 square feet of retail. The outlet says it is the first joint development agreement between Atlanta Public Schools and Atlanta Urban Development, with construction expected to start next December.

Why It Matters for Atlanta Professionals

The project is a test case for how Atlanta turns idle school property into housing and neighborhood retail. For small business owners, 12,000 square feet aimed at local, non-fast-food operators is a future leasing opportunity on the south side.
