Perry Watson IV, president of the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers, told Rolling Out in an interview published Oct. 16 that the biggest barrier for would-be minority dealers is "just access to capital." Watson said minority ownership is about 8 to 9 percent of dealers today, up from what he estimated was less than 3 or 4 percent when NAMAD started, and he pointed to Atlanta: "You can't ignore the minority consumer in a market like Atlanta."
Why It Matters for Atlanta Professionals
Car dealerships are one of the biggest local-business plays in any metro, and Watson named Atlanta specifically as a market where ownership should reflect the customers; NAMAD runs a Dealer Ownership Academy and a Next Gen program for people who want in.
